What Does “Non-Political” Mean? A Discussion of the Lawsuit against UBC
The SFU Academic Freedom Group is delighted to host Josh Dehaas, counsel with the Canadian Constitution Foundation. Josh is representing four UBC faculty members and one UBC graduate student in their lawsuit against UBC. The petitioners allege that UBC has been violating the BC University Act, which states that "universities must be ... non-political in principle", by engaging in political activity. Some examples of such activity include making or requiring land acknowledgements, making statements about the Israeli/Palestinian conflict, and requiring mandatory equity, diversity, and inclusion statements from prospective faculty members. In his talk, Josh will explain the legal rationale for the case.
Josh will be joining us by Zoom. He will speak for 20-30 minutes. We will then have small-group discussions followed by Q&A. We will be observing the Heterodox Way code of conduct at this event.
